Southwest Airlines is poised to become the nation’s fifth-largest carrier, moving ahead of Northwest Airlines in terms of passenger miles flown.
In terms of the number of scheduled passengers flown, Southwest is already the leading U.S. carrier. In Europe, that distinction is held by Ryan Air. Both of these carriers use affordable point-to-point flights, while most of the legacy carriers employ the traditional hub-and-spoke system.
