United to Provide Unlimited Free Bags for $249/Year

United Airlines is offering travelers free baggage checking — for $249 a year.

The carrier has launched what it is calling its "Premier Baggage Program" which alows customers to pay a yearly subscription fee and check as many as two bags per trip for the next year at no additional cost. The program applies to both domestic and international flights.

Without a "Premier Baggage" subscription, the carrier currently charges $20 for a flier’s first checked bag and $30 for a second. Members of United's Mileage Plus Program who have achieved premier status are not subject to the baggage fees and, therefore, would not benefit from this new program. Baggage fees are also waived for those flying on first or business class tickets.
